Athletics is a great way of meeting other people and getting involved in a wide range of different activities – you don’t need much equipment to get started and with so many different disciplines, you never know if there is an event out there you might be a potential superstar at. According to the latest research carried out by Sport England, participation in athletics in the UK is on the rise, with the Olympic Games playing a huge part in getting more people interested in athletics.

Whether you’re a runner, jumper, thrower or a bit of everything, athletics is a great way to get out there and give different things a try.  Sheffield is a hotbed for athletics ability and there are some fantastic facilities throughout the city where you can go along, join a club and meet new people.

Health benefits

Whatever your age, there is great scientific evidence that being physically active can help us to lead healthier lives. Athletics is a great way of getting out and making sure you are doing regular exercise. Just 30 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your wellbeing and with athletics, you don’t need to be down at the track every night in order to fit in your 30 minutes. A run around your local park, practicing your throwing with friends or working on your take off for long jump can all be done away from the track. Getting down to the track once or twice a week is a great way of meeting up with likeminded people and also a good way of pushing yourself and committing to getting out and exercising.

  • An average man has enough energy in his fat stores to run non-stop for 3 days at 15mph. That’s FAST considering about 7-8mph is the average pace that average Joe runs at. Please don’t try this at home!
